The last entry spent time with a bill that was in front of California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger that would ban water softeners in California and require already installed softeners to be removed. The bill was vetoed by the Governor much to the relief of the softener industry but in recent articles it was acknowledged that it's a virtually certainty that a similar, if not identical anti-softener bill will be introduced in the new state legislative session next year.
Similar legislation is popping up in other cities and states about the increasing rise in saline levels in wastewater. It's a battle the softener industry is trying to counter by improving the efficiency of softeners and reducing the amount of saline discharged as the softeners run through their cycles. This seems like a battle that will be fought again and again and with an ever increasing focus on being "green", it's a war that the softener industry may loose as when one state passes a bill to ban softeners, it is inevitable that it will follow in other states across the country.
Being Eco conscious is the driver in this war and it will create an entire industry devoted to alternative solutions to the traditional solution of using saline to soften water. Markets change every day and this is one where the water treatment industry is being challenged to provide smarter, better, more effective solutions to hard water problems.
California is the first state to introduce legislation to ban water softeners using salt to treat hard water and the result is triggering news stories across the country with similar concerns leaving an industry scrambling to defend itself and counter with modifications to their existing technology.
